The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is an advocate for oral health in children and persons with special health care needs, and recognizes that general anesthesia is effective and safe for children with:
- extensive dental treatment
- high anxiety or fear
- uncooperative age-appropriate behavior
- disabilities, or other medical conditions
What is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia provides deep sleep. Because our goal is to provide the safest and most comfortable way to treat young children with extensive decay, our pediatric anesthesiologists work together to provide deep sleep during the procedure. Breathing and vitals will be monitored throughout the procedure.
Safety is Our Priority
Before having anesthesia, your child will need a physical examination by a pediatrician to identify any health issues that could affect the safety of anesthesia. In addition, on the day of the treatment, one of the anesthesiologists will examine the child, and review your child's current health and medical history before anesthesia.
